Read YouTube CTR in context

Impressions click-through rate connects a thumbnail shown on eligible YouTube surfaces to a view that follows that impression. It helps examine a video’s reach, but it does not summarize distribution or viewing quality.

What the metric actually covers

YouTube counts impressions when a thumbnail remains visible long enough in eligible areas such as Home, Search, Subscriptions, playlists or Up Next.

Views from external sites, notifications, cards and end screens do not necessarily create a counted impression. A video can therefore have many views and fewer thumbnail impressions.

There is no universal good CTR

Traffic source, audience, subject and distribution surface all change the rate. A higher CTR can accompany narrower reach; broader distribution can lower it without indicating failure.

Treat a difference as a question: does the title and thumbnail attract the right people, and does the video then deliver on that promise?
